In this photo, cats are resting on a cool marble floor in front of Ayse’s house, which is a favourite spot for them during the summer months. In Turkey, marble is commonly used in homes and outdoor areas due to its ability to stay pleasantly cool, making it a popular choice for floors, stairs, and kitchen countertops. Rather than being regarded as a luxury material, marble is widely available and appreciated for its practicality.

These cats are among the many animals cared for by Ayse, an animal rescuer in Kırklareli, Turkey. In her garden alone, Ayse looks after more than 50 cats. She organises spay and neuter procedures at a local veterinary clinic and ensures that seriously ill animals receive medical treatment, including those suffering from conditions such as kidney failure, panleukopenia, and FIP. Since there is no municipal veterinarian in her district, Ayse takes on this responsibility herself.

Additionally, Ayse provides food for around 30 cats in the residential complex where she previously lived in Istanbul. Because the residents there do not feed these animals, she arranges for food deliveries through the building’s caretaker. Ayse also tries to support a friend who is unemployed and cares for approximately 20 cats in the area.

Overall, Ayse needs about 53 kg (117 lbs) of cat food each week to care for all these animals.
